THE FAILED HILL CLIMB Before attempting a steep hill climb have you answered the following :
1. If you can't walk it you can't drive it
2. Is there an alternative route.
3. If you don't make it to the top can you get down again safely in reverse.
|
| After checking out all your options, you attempt the hill climb and it
becomes apparent that you are not going to make it, and the vehicle has stopped
moving, don't sit there with the wheels spinning as this can cause the vehicle
to slew sideways.
The failed hill climb recovery method that the club recommends and covers at
club training days is as follows:
1 . Deliberately stalling the engine by applying the footbrake to hold you on
the hill. Do not touch the clutch.
2. When you have collected your thoughts, depress the clutch pedal, with your
right foot still on the brake, select reverse gear, then take your left foot off
the clutch
3. You can now take your foot gently off the brake pedal, which will confirm
that you are in gear. If you failed to find reverse, brake and try again.
4. Now that you have the vehicle under control, flick the starter, the weight of
the vehicle will ensure that the motor will fire, allowing you to reverse back
down the hill under full engine braking without touching the pedals. Use
side mirrors for backing don't look over your shoulder
